Design Philosophy
When designing, there are two primary questions that must be answered to assure success.
How do you want your audience to feel? This question will act as a guiding compass for all elements of design. If you’re designing a to-do application, you want them to feel organized, articulated, and motivated. When writing a dramatic narrative teaser, you want them to feel immersed, enthralled, and thoughtful. When designing a luxury skincare brand, you want them to feel clean, classy, and elegant. The easiest way to get your message across to someone is to make them feel it, no matter the medium. Once you have the emotional core of the project, you have the vehicle to design.
What purpose does your design serve? This question will keep your scope in check. If your project, be it a game, application, book, or something else, doesn’t have a defined useful purpose, there will be nothing for the audience’s emotions to attach to. No reason for them to engage in the first place, and nothing for you to design around. For applications, this purpose might be the functional requirements. For a book, it may be the message and themes you’re trying to impart on your readers. Once you have a defined purpose, you have the goal your project should be aiming for.
Any questions beyond these are supplementary, and serve to better organize, understand, and approach the steps to actually achieve a successful design. All that’s left is to follow through.
